The rating ladder
What the VA looks for at each percentage.
How to describe it (and win the rating)
- DC 9905 was substantially revised effective September 10, 2017. The current criteria pair measured inter-incisal range of motion (in mm) with a specified level of dietary restriction (soft/semi-solid, only semi-solid, or only liquid). Ensure the version being applied matches the correct date.
- Under the current version, the note directs the rater to use whichever measurement or combination yields the higher evaluation when multiple criteria are present.
- Inter-incisal distance must be measured in millimeters; document the exact figure rather than a range.
- Dietary restriction level is an integral part of every tier at 10% and above under the current criteria and must be documented specifically (soft/semi-solid vs. only semi-solid vs. only liquid).
- Lateral excursion 0 to 4 mm supports a 10% rating, but per the regulation ratings for limited inter-incisal movement are not combined with ratings for limited lateral excursion.
- TMJ replacement (prosthesis) is evaluated under a separate note/criteria; confirm whether a joint replacement has occurred as it carries a distinct minimum evaluation.
Evidence that helps
- Dental/oral examination (DBQ for Dental and Oral Conditions or Temporomandibular Disorders) with measured inter-incisal opening in millimeters
- Measured lateral excursive movement in millimeters
- Documentation of specific dietary restrictions (soft/semi-solid, only semi-solid, or only liquid foods)
- Imaging or clinical findings establishing the TMJ diagnosis (X-ray, MRI, CT, or panoramic film as applicable)
- Treatment records reflecting pain, locking, clicking, muscle spasm, or functional loss
- Statements documenting flare-ups and additional functional loss during flares
- If applicable, surgical/operative records including any TMJ prosthesis or joint replacement

Common questions
What is the VA disability rating for tmj dysfunction?
The VA rates tmj dysfunction under 38 CFR diagnostic code 9905. The rating tiers are: 10% — Inter-incisal range 30 to 34 mm with dietary restrictions to soft and semi-solid foods; OR lateral excursion 0 to 4 mm. Rate whichever yields the higher evaluation.; 20% — Inter-incisal range 30 to 34 mm with dietary restrictions to only semi-solid foods; OR inter-incisal range 20 to 29 mm with dietary restrictions to soft and semi-solid foods. Rate whichever yields the higher evaluation.; 30% — Inter-incisal range 30 to 34 mm with dietary restrictions to only liquid foods; OR inter-incisal range 20 to 29 mm with dietary restrictions to only semi-solid foods; OR inter-incisal range 10 to 19 mm with dietary restrictions to soft and semi-solid foods. Rate whichever yields the higher evaluation.; 40% — Inter-incisal range 20 to 29 mm with dietary restrictions to only liquid foods; OR inter-incisal range 10 to 19 mm with dietary restrictions to only semi-solid foods. Rate whichever yields the higher evaluation.; 50% — Inter-incisal range 10 to 19 mm with dietary restrictions to only liquid foods; OR inter-incisal range 0 to 9 mm regardless of dietary restriction. Rate whichever yields the higher evaluation.. Your exact percentage depends on the severity documented in your records and C&P exam.
How much VA disability compensation is tmj dysfunction?
Monthly pay depends on your assigned rating percentage and your dependents, not the condition alone. TMJ Dysfunction can be rated from 10% to 50%. Use the free US Vet Help disability calculator for your exact 2026 monthly amount.
What evidence do I need for a tmj dysfunction VA claim?
Evidence that helps includes: Dental/oral examination (DBQ for Dental and Oral Conditions or Temporomandibular Disorders) with measured inter-incisal opening in millimeters; Measured lateral excursive movement in millimeters; Documentation of specific dietary restrictions (soft/semi-solid, only semi-solid, or only liquid foods); Imaging or clinical findings establishing the TMJ diagnosis (X-ray, MRI, CT, or panoramic film as applicable); Treatment records reflecting pain, locking, clicking, muscle spasm, or functional loss; Statements documenting flare-ups and additional functional loss during flares; If applicable, surgical/operative records including any TMJ prosthesis or joint replacement.
How do I get the correct rating for tmj dysfunction?
To be rated accurately: DC 9905 was substantially revised effective September 10, 2017.
